I know some mermaid/selkie/assorted creatures mythology and I know they're not pretty women in water, but I'm still attached to the idea. One thing among so many good parts of this book that was pointed out was a character saying that people expect mermaids to be pretty women swimming in water. This book is short but incredibly engaging.

I wanted the book to be longer! I found out it was the prologue novella in a series, and I'm so excited to read the rest of the books! I can't remember when I first tensed while reading this, but I was tense. This book did it effortlessly and I haven't slept well since reading it. I have read other books that are trying so, so hard to be this book: 'sea creatures attack sailors' horror. It's not literary fiction meant to use monsters as analogies for social issues. This is not a funny, campy bizzaro novel. If you're looking for anything else, maybe you should move along.

If you're looking for an exciting horror novel with splatter, this is it. I found the mermaids absolutely brilliant and scary. Deep waters are scary as is, add homicidal mermaids to the mix and it's a perfect recipe for a horror book as far as I'm concerned. Since then I've been longing to find something with killer mermaids that's not too campy. I never thought of mermaids as especially creepy or scary, up until Cabin In The Wood's 'merman'. Now all I can do is wait for November for the sequel to come out (don't worry though, the story ends in this volume, it's not a cliffhanger.) It really made me wish I hadn't read all of her books, so I could find something to ease me out of my excitement. Plus her writings get more feminist and queer-friendly each year. Her gore scenes make my heart rush and eyes flutter with the love and adoration any horror fan would feel. This woman writes action adventures so damn well, more so when the books are on the smaller size (under 200 pages) and you get right into the action. This was me the first two hours after I finished Rolling In The Deep. You know this feeling when you've just finished a book that was very fun and exciting and you start scrolling through the rest of the author's works and various lists, trying maniacally to find something similar to read, because the story you just finished was just THAT GOOD.
